TOUR DESCRIPTION:

The tour starts from Piacenza City and it is designed to give you an overall impression of the eastern portion of Piacenza Countryside Arda Valley. This area is particularly famous for remarkable medieval sites with well preserved castles and boroughs, the flavour of a delicious cuisine and a variety of superb wines.The morning portion of the tour will take you to an interesting fine Wine Estate for a wine tasting guided tour of “Colli Piacentini DOC” (=CDO Controlled Designation of Origin) wines. Among presented by professional Sommeliers (Wine Stewards). You’ll taste an array of wines including the Sparkling white Ortrugo (straw color with greenish hues, giving a suggestion of delicate floral aroma of white flowers); the Monterosso Valdarda Doc Colli Piacentini sparkling white wine that is “the” local wine by definition, the most important of the area, produced in the nearby valleys. Straw-yellow in colour with a delicate bouquet, dry, medium-sweet or sweet, this wine is iperfect to couple cured-meat or pasta dishes. The “king” of Colli Piacentini wines: the Gutturnio DOC Colli Piacentini, a medium sweet well-balanced red wine, produced in two versions: sparkling or not. Following this exciting morning it is time to enjoy the Piacentina Cuisine with an interesting Lunch in a Typical Trattoria Piacentina. The Piacentina Cuisine is not very fat, it is simple and unrefined compared to other Emilian gastronomies. It comes from very old and ancient traditions that are still very alive on the family-tables and in the typical Trattoria Piacentina. You’ll have the chance to experience the "Coppa Piacentina DOP" a kind of cured meat, very perfumed and delicate; the "Salame Piacentino DOP" and the "Pancetta Piacentina DOP". Of course, you cannot miss the "Pisarei e faso'" a typical dish from the country tradition, consisting in handmade small "gnocchi" of flour and bread crumbles, cooked with tomato-sauce and "borlotti beans", garlic, onion , lard , pepper and “Grana Padano DOP” grated cheese.
After Lunch spend some time in the village of Vigolo Marchese and admire the romanic church and baptistery of Saint John, whose construction started in the year 1008 by the marquise Oberto d’Orta Lord of Nure Valley.
Proceed to the Medieval Borough of Castell’Arquato choosen as a natural set for several movies. Admire the magnificent medieval buildings and walk along small narrow streets embracing the wide and monumental square dominated by the “Fortress of Visconti” (Rocca Viscontea) dated XIV Century. Also visit the “Palazzo del Podestà”, the “Palace of Justice”, the Hospital of Santo Spirito, now home of the Geological Museum. Visit the Collegiate, one of the oldest churches dated year 758 a.C.On the way back to Piacenza, stop at a local Wine Cellar Shop (Enoteca) where finding your preferred bottle among the variety of “Colli Piacentini DOC wines. This concludes your pleasant day in the province of Piacenza. Arrivederci!
